Who is Ray Charles?

 

I know you have had the chance to listen to Ray Charles do his thing. The man was a genius. Many people don’t realize that most of his recordings and songs are based on old country tunes. The beat is very much country but with a bluesy twist that makes it different.

The Beginning for Ray Charles

He was born in the south,
Albany, Georgia to be exact on September 23, 1930 and died on June 10, 2004
. He was hired as a consultant to the movie RAY and was able to see the finished product before he died.

After turning blind his mother sent him to a school for the deaf and blind in
St. Augustine, Florida where he learned to write music and play instruments. When he got out of school he moved to Seattle, Washington
and began producing records.

He shortened his name to Ray Charles from his original name of Ray Charles Robinson so that there would be no confusion between him and the great boxer Sugar Ray Robinson.

He had a number of successful records but it wasn’t until he produced “I got a Woman” that he went from also ran to star. After that he never looked back. He made sure that he was at the very top of any new type of music and was an innovator of lots of types.

His problems

 

His drug addiction was well known and his ability to stop has been well documented.

He has won many Grammy awards and has been honored by many different organizations including the
Georgia State house by making Georgia it’s state song. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the list goes on. He has been labeled by Rolling Stone Magazine as the #10 greatest artist of all time.

 

He has 12 children from seven different women.

He will always be the Greatest entertainer. I assume that is the way you feel or you would not be here.
